The Howard County Recreation Department announces the return of its popular,

'edutaining' course on bicycles - fundamentals of riding, maintenance, and  repair.

Now in its 13th year, students will learn everything they'll need to
know for the bikes they have or the ones they plan to get.

Fit, selection, riding fundamentals, aspects of racing, touring,
mountain, and recreational riding are covered.

Learn everything from 'on the road' emergency fixes to overhaul and
wheel building. Students get hands-on experience on their own bikes.
Tools are provided and students may bring any they have as well

With more than 35 years and thousands of graduates behind him, as well as 45 years in the bicycle business,
'professor' Larry Black brings his own brand of 'Stand-Up Mechanics'
to the workbench and students will go away with a newly-charged belief
that 'they can do it themselves'

For those that would still prefer to let professionals work on their
bikes, the course teaches how to work with their shops or neighborhood
professionals and tinkerers to get the most bang for their repair buck.

Larry's 'tricks of the trade' that he's picked up from almost 40 years
behind the stand are invaluable.

Special attention on getting the most out of your current bike is
another favorite topic, as is how to select new and used bikes.

This Fall session includes info on riding more safely and
comfortably in what may no longer be the 'off season'

Course fee of $75 includes 4 2-hour sessions and all materials,
supplies, and the use of tools. Special discounts on Park Tools during
and 30 days after the session are extended to students. A Park Tool
School Manual can be purchased in advance or at the class.

Graduates include those that have gone on to gain employment in
and open their own bike shops and everyone has had the benefit of
getting more out of biking.
